Shambles Market York

Shambles Market is one of the biggest and best markets in York, with over 70 stalls selling everything from fresh produce and meat, to fashion and gifts. The main entrances to the market can be found on Parliament Street, Kings Square, Shambles, and Patrick Pool, with many more among some hidden side streets.

The market is open from 9am until 5pm every day (4pm in the winter) and is not only a great shopping location but a fascinating historical site. The very first version of Shambles market is thought to have been founded by the Romans in 71 AD, developing into a single market in the Victorian era. In 1964 this became Newgate Market, and a refurbishment in 2014 revealed the new and modern Shambles market we know today.

Whether you’re searching for something specific or just coming along for a leisurely browse, there will be something for everyone between the 70+ vendors set up at the market.

If you’re in need of a last-minute gift, Shambles Markets can assist! Pick up a Wharfdale Candle Co candle for Mum, a Black Yak Ltd jumper for Dad, or a magical Cottingley Gin for someone special – you’ll be spoilt for choice! Take a look at the full list of goods on offer, including art, accessories, homeware and much more.

If you get hungry after all your shopping, visit the Shambles Food Court to try some delicious street food. Whatever you’re in the mood for you’ll be satisfied, and the great range of vegan and vegetarian options available mean everyone is catered for!

Pop in to Shambles Kitchen for a critically acclaimed pulled pork sandwich straight from the meat smoker, or a delicious vegan Shawarma. Visit Thai Season for incredible, authentic Thai food freshly made while you wander the markets. With rice, noodle, and curry dishes all available, flavour is on the menu at this stall.

Travel the world while only travelling between stalls and move onto Los Moros for some North African and middle eastern cuisine. The delicious menu is all designed to be eaten on the move, or you can relax and take a seat under some umbrellas to eat in the shade - or shelter from the rain! Why not challenge yourself to try something different on your next visit – you won’t run out of options!
