The Best Bars and Pubs in York

If you enjoy a good night out then the city centre has some of the best bars and pubs in York. The city is rumoured to have 365 pubs, one for every day of the year. We can’t confirm every one of those pubs but what we can guarantee is the city is home to a massive choice of pubs and bars, many of which are within walking – maybe stumbling – distance of home.

Whether it’s a chilled glass of wine with a view over the river Foss or a pint of real ale in a ‘proper’ pub, York has it all. With watering holes in every genre you can think of including micro, well-known chains, historic, food-focused, cocktail connoisseurs, open fire, dog-friendly and family friendly, there really is something for everyone.

It’s also home to a number of nightclubs and live music venues where you can grab a late-night drink and party into the small hours.

THE BLUE BELL

Loved by locals, this treasured pub is small in size but big on atmosphere. The grade II-listed pub has been serving since 1758. Its untouched Edwardian interior dates from 1903 and featured as the backdrop to Andrew Marr’s introduction to his The Making of Modern Britain series. It’s steeped in history and if it’s real ale you’re after, it’s the best place to go.

THE YORK TAP

With an impressive choice of nationally sourced beers and wines it would be rude not to call in for a tipple after a busy day at work. And since it’s situated, rather handily, at the train station – what better place to stop off after an away-day for work?

HARKERS

Rich in history, the site where Harkers stands today is famous for being the entrance to the city of York in 300AD. A traditional pub with real ales, with plenty of spirits to choose from, it serves classic pub fayre.
